New Year, 1 January 2023
A new year greeting written in a winter of blackouts, from a city that celebrated anyway and quietly.
A new year to everyone, and I will keep this plain.
Last night was not a normal new year's eve and nobody pretended it was. No fireworks, for good reasons. Curfew. In many places no power for part of the evening, so tables were laid around a lamp or a candle and the meal was cooked earlier than usual in case.
People marked it anyway. Quietly, in flats, with whoever was there — which in a great many cases was not everyone.
I have nothing wise to add. I hope this year is better than the one behind it, and I hope the tables are fuller by the next one.
A good year to your house, whoever is at it.
