Constitution Day 2020

A short greeting from a strange summer, when public occasions had mostly moved indoors or online.

A good Constitution Day.

A strange summer for public occasions. Ceremonies were reduced, gatherings limited, and most of what would normally happen in a square happened on a screen instead.

I keep these greetings short by principle — the constitutional debates belong to Ukrainians and not to me. What I will note about 2020 is something adjacent: institutions kept working when the buildings were half empty. Registries processed, courts sat remotely, services were delivered digitally, and the machinery of a state carried on without most of its people being physically present.

That was tested by a pandemic and it turned out to be useful preparation for something else entirely. Nobody planned it that way.

A good day to everyone marking it.
