Day of Unity, 22 January 2004
A unity day greeting written before I moved here, when the day was only a line in a calendar to me.
A good Day of Unity to everyone marking it.
In January 2004 I had not yet moved to Kyiv, and this was a date I knew about rather than a day I had seen. Somebody had told me people join hands across a bridge; I remember thinking it sounded like a small gesture for a national observance.
It took seeing it to understand that the smallness is the point. It requires nothing but people turning up, and that is a harder test than a ceremony.
A good day to everyone standing on a bridge today, and to those reading about it from somewhere else, as I am.
