A unity day greeting in a difficult January, kept to the gesture itself.

A good Day of Unity to everyone marking it.

This is a hard January and I will not write around that. The commemoration is going ahead as it does every year: people standing in a line on a bridge, holding hands, for a few minutes in the cold.

What strikes me about the gesture this year is how modest it is. It makes no claim, demands nothing of anyone else and takes four minutes. It simply happens, in the same place, on the same date, done by whoever comes.

Modest things repeated annually are what survive periods when large things cannot be attempted.

A good day to you and yours.
