Finding contamination from the air
The slowest part of demining is deciding where to look. Aerial imagery and pattern analysis are changing that, and the gains are larger than they sound.
Every hour spent clearing land that was never contaminated is an hour not spent on land that is. Survey accuracy therefore multiplies the value of every clearance team, and this is where technology has contributed most.
What is being used
Drone imagery, flown systematically over suspected areas, revealing craters, vehicle tracks, defensive earthworks and disturbed ground that indicate where a position was and therefore where mines are likely.
Satellite imagery for larger sweeps and for change detection — comparing a field before and after tells you a great deal about what happened on it.
And analysis that combines imagery with incident records, witness accounts and known military patterns, since mines are laid according to doctrine rather than at random.
What it does not do
It does not find individual mines. No sensor flown from the air reliably detects a small plastic device under soil. What it does is narrow the search area, sometimes dramatically, so that the expensive ground methods are applied where they will find something.
Why the distinction matters
Technology claims in mine action are frequently overstated, and every unrealistic promise costs credibility that the sector cannot spare. The honest description is that this is a targeting tool, not a detection one, and as a targeting tool it is genuinely valuable.
