Ivana Kupala, 7 July 2006
My first Kupala night watched properly, and the thing that surprised me about who was there.
A good Kupala night to everyone marking it.
This is the first one I have seen properly rather than heard described, and the surprise was the age range. I had expected an older crowd keeping an old custom. It is the opposite: this is run by people in their twenties, with a certain number of amused parents standing at the edge holding coats.
A tradition maintained by the young does not need defending by anyone. It simply continues, and the older generation is invited rather than in charge.
A good night to you, and dry clothes afterwards.
