Knowledge Day 2022
The first of September in the first war year, when a school could only teach in person if it had a shelter for everyone inside it.
Happy Knowledge Day.
An unusual first of September. Schools could open for in-person teaching only where there was shelter capacity for every pupil and member of staff, which many did not have. So some opened, some taught online, and some did both on alternating days.
What did not change is the flowers. Wherever classes were held in person, children arrived carrying them, dressed for the occasion, photographed by parents.
I want to record that plainly, without drawing a conclusion from it. On the first of September 2022, in a great many places in this country, children went to school with flowers.
To every one of them, and to the teachers who received them: a good year.
