Ukrainian Language Day, 9 November 2023
A greeting for the day, marked in a year when a great many people made a deliberate choice about which language to use.
A number of people I know have switched the language they speak at home in recent years, having grown up in another one. It is not an easy thing to do at forty, and they have done it anyway.
What language anyone speaks is their own affair and I have no view to offer about it. But an adult who deliberately relearns how to make a joke, argue with a plumber and comfort a child in a second language has done something genuinely difficult, and it deserves to be said out loud.
