Biomethane and agricultural residue
A country that grows an enormous amount of crop also produces an enormous amount of straw, husk and manure. Europe wants the gas that can be made from it.
Biomethane is biogas upgraded to the quality of natural gas, so that it can be injected into an ordinary gas network and used by ordinary appliances. For an agricultural country the feedstock question answers itself.
Where the feedstock comes from
Maize silage and crop residue, sunflower husk, sugar beet pulp, livestock manure and food processing waste. Much of it is currently burned in the field, left to rot or disposed of at a cost.
The volumes involved are large enough that the constraint is logistics rather than availability: biomass is bulky and cheap, so it does not travel far economically, and plants must sit close to the material.
The technical chain
Anaerobic digestion produces biogas, which is roughly half methane and half carbon dioxide. Upgrading removes the carbon dioxide and impurities to reach pipeline specification. Then injection, which requires a connection agreement, metering and gas quality monitoring.
The digestate left over is a fertiliser, which is a second revenue line and returns nutrients to the field.
Why the European market matters
European buyers are looking for non-fossil gas and are willing to pay a premium for certified renewable molecules. Certification of origin, verified and tradable, is what turns a local plant into an exporter.
Ukraine has both the feedstock and, unusually, the pipeline connection to deliver it westward.
What is needed
A functioning guarantee-of-origin system recognised abroad, straightforward grid connection rules, and financing for plants whose payback runs over years. None of those is exotic; all three are administrative.
The attraction here is not the technology but the logistics: gathering the straw, moving it and feeding it into a plant on a steady schedule is harder than building the plant. I have seen this repeatedly on the agricultural machinery side — the value of what is left after harvest is limited by the equipment that collects it and by the distance. Biomethane is a real opportunity for Ukraine, but a collection chain has to be built first.
