Vyshyvanka Day, 19 May 2022

A greeting for the day, marked in a spring when a great many shirts were a long way from the wardrobe they came out of.

An embroidered shirt is one of the few things that fits in a bag you pack quickly, which is why so many of them travelled this year.

They turned up in offices, schools and church halls in cities that had never seen one, worn by people explaining a pattern to a neighbour who had asked politely.

A garment that is easy to carry and hard to mistake for anything else turns out to be a good design for a difficult year.

Happy Vyshyvanka Day to everyone wearing one today, wherever the wardrobe is.
