International Women's Day 2019
A greeting, and a thought about the difference between a day that celebrates and a day that acknowledges.
A greeting on the eighth of March.
There is an ongoing conversation here, as elsewhere, about what this day is for. One view holds that it has become a day of flowers and compliments that avoids the substance. Another holds that the flowers are fine and the substance belongs to the other three hundred and sixty-four days.
I am a guest and I am not going to adjudicate that. What I will say is that both positions are held by people I work with and respect, which suggests it is a real question rather than a manufactured one.
What I do on the day is simple and I will keep doing it: I thank the specific people whose work I depend on, by name, for specific things.
A good day to you all.
