International Women's Day 2024
A greeting in a period when the composition of the workforce has changed more than at any point I have witnessed here.
A greeting on the eighth of March.
An observation from twenty years of hiring here. The composition of the working population has shifted more in the last few years than in the whole period before it, and women have moved into roles and sectors where they were previously a small minority.
Heavy transport. Machine operation. Site supervision. Technical trades that had been treated, without much examination, as male by default. Where the assumption was tested it mostly turned out to be an assumption.
I do not want to romanticise the circumstances that produced this. But a change of this kind, once made, does not usually reverse fully, and I think that will prove to be permanent and beneficial.
To the women running things today, in whatever sector: a good day and my thanks.
