A day of remembrance.

Fifteen of these now. Someone explained the custom to me in my first autumn here and I have kept it since, without ever quite feeling entitled to.

I have thought about why a foreigner should mark another country's grief, and the answer I have settled on is simple. I live here. My work is here. The people I employ and work alongside carry family histories that include this, usually without discussing it. Standing apart from a day the whole country observes, on the grounds that it is not technically mine, would be a strange way to live in a place.

So: a candle in the window this evening, and nothing more said.
