Vyshyvanka Day, 15 May 2014

A good Vyshyvanka Day to everyone wearing one today.

I have watched this day grow steadily since I first noticed it, and this year the change is not gradual. The metro this morning was full of embroidery, offices are largely in it, and children have been dressed in shirts that were clearly found in a wardrobe rather than bought.

I am not going to write about why, and I would be overstepping if I tried. It is not a foreigner's subject.

What I can say is what the day itself is doing, which has not changed: it is a shirt, worn on the same day by a large number of people who never agreed to do it together, and it means what each of them means by it.
