Ukrainian Language Day, 9 November 2016
A greeting for the day, and a note on the words a language keeps that others have no room for.
Every language has words that another has to explain in a sentence. This one has a good many, and most of them are about weather, food or the exact degree of somebody's hospitality.
You can tell a great deal about a place from what it has found worth naming precisely.
I still translate in my head more often than I would like, and every so often I catch myself reaching first for the Ukrainian word because there is no short equivalent.
Happy Ukrainian Language and Writing Day.
